I'm not sure if the friend system will remain as it is in the current Beta version of the client, but I can't add a friend of mine because she hasn't posted anything in the forums and I'm therefore unable to hover over her avatar to invite her, but I know her username and email address. It seems silly that I can't just type my friends' usernames or email addresses into the client directly.
If you're still looking to connect with people, I'm trying to fill up my friends list too.
