This has a great story and oozes style, but the real joy is in the combat. In all my life, I've never played a game with a deeper and more fun melee combat system and I'm shocked it hasn't been equaled since. A huge part of the appeal is how fluid and empowering the moveset is. As a major fan of Hong Kong martial arts cinema, it was a total blast to play something that let me feel like I was choreographing my very own action setpiece (on the fly). The assorted environments and character archetypes are varied enough to keep things really fresh and interesting, and the game never wears out its welcome over the lengthy playtime. REMASTER! This has a great story and oozes style, but the real joy is in the combat. I remember playing this game the same year that Matrix premiered in theaters, and it reminded me of that movie in some stages due to the protagonist's clothing, I loved the gameplay and I loved the story to this day I am sad to remember that the sequel had been canceled because the game ended open-ended after the end of the world. This game really deserves to be preserved!

Now this is a strange one I really love. I got a physical copy of Oni when an uncle that was living in another country came to visit us and gifted me Theocracy (Which I made a review too) and my sister (Or cousin, I don't remember which one of them) a copy of Oni. She wasn't much into gaming so she ended up gifting me her game. It was A-MA-ZING! I was fully into anime on that time and this game got everything covered: A badass main character, an anime-like story, the whole game design was anime-like, like Ghost in the Shell, but in a 3D game. 3D games were a bit limited in that time but this one was crafted good. The shooting was a bit meh tbh, but the close combat was great. Totally ahead of the time.

I played a bit of this game as a kid. Not sure what drew me to it, but I really had fun with it. I remember trying to do this really tricky jump and either dying or landing with a bit of health left. I would love to go back and finally beat it.

I played/streamed Oni for the first time roughly 8 years ago now on PC using the Anniversary Edition patches (huge props to the Oni community btw), and I STILL think about it a lot to this day. It's definitely got that campy/cheesy early 2000s knock-off anime vibe going on, but there aren't many games that play quite like it. The moment-to-moment melee and gun combat is really fun to get into once you're through the initial learning curve. There's even special moves both the enemies and Konoko shout the names of when triggered, some of which would be frequently referenced in my online groups for years to come (NUCLEAR TACKLE, STATIC FIST, and RISING FURY primarily). It's certainly a game that's worth experiencing and a GOG version would really help people on that front. Bonus points if it utilizes or works with the existing community fixes and content, if even possible.

Oni managed to do the impossible: Having 90s/early 2000s ersatz "anime" art drawn by western artists NOT be a visual abomination alone is impressive, but making it actually look GOOD alone is enough to make the game legendary. A shame the studio got stuck working on some obscure TPS/RTS hybrid for consoles.

Oni is a great game, the anime style that has and the aesthtics are awesome, truly a cult classic, we want a sequel but a re-release would be awesome, specially since you require a community patch to make it work again. From my memories, it left me a great impression, the melee and gun combat are quite good, one of the best games i played in my teenagers years, hopefully gog make it return...

What this game desperately needs is a remake that can take full advantage of the potential the scenario and the (at the time) largely experimental gameplay only managed to hint at. But since Bungie has less than zero interest in doing so, we clearly need to bring more attention to the original to incentivize them.

When I got this game I was never a real fan of 3d games that much, while big advancements were made I somehow was cheesing and getting int quirky situations. Oni despite its flaws and what it did however made me embrace them more and fall in love. I would so love it if a remaster would come out and fill the world that you are in to remove the empty feeling sometimes, due limitations of back than, but especially a proper sequel still is still lingering in me. I am lucky I have this on disc and seriously have it in extra safe casing, but this should be so much in gog as it is impossible to get anywhere and needs to be preserved and hopefully can inspire something similar or a sequel.

FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed. The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.
