Oh there's so much wrong in this. I could waste an hour or two on a rebuttal.
There's at least seven recent threads about security and hacking. If you don't think that's important, well that's on you.
If you're only "bad sites" for "pinging" and "lag", you're missing a large portion of what's happening out there.
3K? We average 6 million blocked connections every day at our server firewalls. I'll pull the latest "never again" blocked count including ranges later today if you want but I'm sure there's at least 3 more zeros on that count.
Hosts blocks are worthless anyway. Most of these folks have a very much larger range of compromised servers at their command. They just move onto the next machine.
edit: Oh and if you're blocking google in your host file, that's on you.
