gog's troubleshooting page: crashing_in_general

This is a generic page, not specific to any game. It actually is advising people to turn off UAC!? This is not something you should be advising your users to do, ever! This is the worst possible advice you can give to people, particularly those who don't understand the implications of what they're doing. This page doesn't give any hints about the possible ramifications of this.

If there exists a game that requires UAC to be off (and I personally have never encountered this), then that game should be explicitly marked on the storefront, and this should be a troubleshooting recommendation specific to that game. This absolutely SHOULD NOT be general troubleshooting advice!

I have encountered it. Mass Effect 1 PC for me wouldn't work at all, for anything, with it on. Turn it off, starts right up.

Strange, but that is definitely not a universal issue with the game, as it worked fine for me with UAC on.

Think EA gave the same advice too, turn UAC off.

Here's the thing about people: the kind of person who would turn it off without understanding what they're doing is the kind of person who would give a popup program root anyway, so it's not really putting them at extra risk.

"Alert! Your browser is not secure! Click Here for most updated security!"

"Hmm, well, I wouldn't want to have an unsecure firefox." <click> ::UAC prompt:: "Stupid Windows, of course I know what I'm doing."

It's in the same venue as the "Turn off your antivirus" and/or "Turn off your firewall". It's a temporary change to see if that solves the issue, in which case one can continue investigating what said issue might be. The most usual case for such issues is folder permissions, which turning UAC off does make it easier to identify. It is not meant as a permanent solution, just a temporary change for troubleshooting.
