We Are Not Alone

Janky, but interesting story.

I don't want to be too harsh on this game, It seems to have been made with a very small team. The jank is real on this one, I had trouble just trying to remap the movement controls, which didn't seem to work and didn't hold between game start ups anyway. So hope you like WASD and if not.. well tough. Luckily the game isn't action heavy and half the time you're in point/click 3rd person anyway. The voice over sounds like it was recorded on desk mics, The game also is on rails. There is very little if anything you can do out of order so you don't have much agency in the game you do get a few choices to make, and it has at least 2 endings. If you can look past this though the story was interesting, you don't get a definitive ending, it seems like there is going to be a sequel.

XCOM® 2

Mixed bag

Hard to make heads or tails of this game honestly. There are parts of the game that are really good, while other parts are complete garbage. I remember hearing about the 1st 2 X-com games in the 90's but never played them my self, This was my 1st exp with X-com. Turn based games.. in general are not my goto genre, Im no stranger though. I played on Rookie being new to X-com and found the difficult to be inverse, you start off with very under powered soldiers, and the enemies do scale as you go up but you scale higher as your soldiers improve. (I think this not so on higher difficulties) Still I found the game frustrating at the start, The game puts you in a panic with a avatar project progress bar and extremely limited resources, that I don't mind but the clock was unneeded pressure, the 1st few levels you feel like you don't really have full control of the game I remember thinking Im more along for the ride then in control. The RNG (Random Number Generator) in this game is bogus, especially on "hacking" as it gives you a % of success but I can tell you from experiments anything less than about 90% is likely to fail if it's the "2nd harder" option. I always quick saved before a hacking attempt and seen 65% chance hacks fail over a dozen times in a row (actually not succeeding on 13 but rather giving up after) It definitely felt at times the game was being unfair or unrealistic with it's hit probabilities. The Tutorial mission is pretty pathetic I mean.. embarrassingly pathetic if I was a dev on this game I think I'd be ashamed to say I had anything to do with the tutorial development, giving you only the most rudamental of explanation of the games functions.. I found my self repeatedly going to google for questions abut the interface. Which imo is one of the weakest parts of the game, It's clear they went for an immersive minimalist UI but it's just trash imo, The game is fully 3d rendered but also only allows 4 angles of view, a throw back to isometic games of the 90's This sounds all well and nostalgic until you realize you can't see things because of trees or other obstructions, early on I became very familiar with the load screen undoing mistaken moves. The game uses a "fog of war" which "is" a choice.. but a bad one imo as I always preferred to see all the units in a turn base game and treat it as a sort of game of chess, this game is a little more action oriented and instead breaks enemies up into small groups, ones not exposed seem to rarely if ever do anything meaningful in the fog of war, so you end up just tack on a few enemies at a time.. some will like this I personally didn't and found enemies popping in / spawning at some points which was annoying to view. The levels them selves are rather small, the maps are randomly generated with buildings being placed at random spots so the maps do feel somewhat different level to level, I will give the game credit for that, it also can randomly generate soldiers to recruit (although there are only so many pre set "faces" to put on them" so you can easily end up with look alikes. The maps are also pretty destructible which was fun and added to the strategy. Other parts of the game are randomized to, infact most things are, but randomization did not really translate into increased enjoyment when the missions them selves are fairly rigid in their objectives and layout, place a group of enemies here, there, etc It all was very predictable after a while and missions despite the levels being different played out the same over and over again the same way. You would think a game like this having so much randomized it would have a "skirmish" option but there isn't such. Most missions are time fillers meant to offset a bad event or just eat time, actual "story" missions are incredibly thin.. so thin in fact most of the game is just grinding for supplies and exp for your soldiers for the final fight. You can customize your soldiers in a number of ways and I will say you do get a certain attachment to some of them, but and this is where the game fails.. again. There is a end point in this game, the game does not have a newgame+ mode, you can export your characters from your roster to the "character pool" but this just means you will have the have the chance to recruit a solider in rookie form in another game, not carry them forward into another game. I beat the game and then attempted a 2nd play thru to see if I could improve my early performance with the knowledge I gained from the 1st game but what I quickly found is starting from scratch was not enjoyable, I could have just used cheats to continue my 1st game forever and the outcome would be the same then if I had just grind for everything a 2nd time on 2nd play thru, so this is one game that I see no replay value in and will be uninstalling with no intention of revisiting anytime soon. Some of these aspects of the game are well disliked and can be mitigated by mods However the vast majority of the mods are on Steam where the game was originally released, in the workshop, moreso the "mod manager" that came with the game is absent in the GoG release, although there is an alternative loader if you can source the mods you want. I've also heard the DLC's fix and improve a lot of aspects of the game, But that is NOT what I'm reviewing here. As a side note I'd mention the original game had multiplayer, GoG version does not and yet it stil tries to contact the internet and if you completely disable your network it will warn you that multiplayer is disabled while network is unavailable, I got a good laugh out of that. I know the game and series has a strong following but my recommendation is unless you're a die hard turn base strategy game player or love X-Com series skip this one, Although I did enjoy it over all it still left me with a bad aftertaste and it was very frustrating to get started with it, some aspects of the game are great but there are other games turn base games I'd recommend over it. P.S if you have issues with the game taking forever to load after a mission or lag/freezing on videos.. make sure you're not in window mode.. I found this problem went away for me when I was in fullscreen mode.

Mad Max

Feels like a Mad Max

Bought on a whim, I don't remember this game being released in 2015, I grew up on Mad Max movies but the IP has always been flawed in ways so my expectations wasn't that high. But actually it's quite good, it has some flaws like all games do and there are some jank. But for the most part the game does deliver on it's promise of putting you in madmax's universe, so the developers succeeded there. Max him self is not voiced by Mel Gibson, that was probably to much of an ask. The guy who does the voice work is alright though. But to be honest you never really feel like max, you feel like just another waste lander, max is portrayed as even colder and darker in this game then in the movies, imo actually pushing him past anti-hero and leave him teetering on the edge of being a villain him self. The game is pretty repetitive and the missions generally revolved around killing this or fetching that.. your standard affair, but almost every location feels unique and the world has a surprisingly large size and variety of environments which keeps the game-play from slipping into being monotonous and more about exploration. Despite it being 10 years old the game still looks pretty good and I found my self stopping to admire the view, early on it felt like a desperate struggle for survival. Outside of entering strong holds or fast traveling there is no load time so the game feels very seamless. The game has a lot of descriptive text for everything, upgrades, cars, people, locations.. if you want to take the time to read it all. They put your car in the "bios" section which is pretty fitting given it becomes a character of it's own, customizable to fit your preference. The dialog is generally pretty good, and there is a lot of it. The combat both in and out of the car is simple, brutal, and enjoyable. Most of the games content revolves around making allies and taking out threats on the map, camps, minefields, convoys, snipers, etc. You can take them on in any order you want, you get upgrades for your efforts but most of them are optional so you don't even need to clear the map to complete the game. The best way to play this is to just roam and let the wind blow you where ever and with constant patrols and dust storms I found my self often setting out with a plan and then getting side tracked by chasing down a patrol of raiders, or coming across a newly discovered scavenging location. I spent dozens of hours on this game and half that time was probably just getting side tracked and exploring, chasing and fighting random enemies. The game makes no safe spaces outside of a strong hold either, raiding a camp? a passing patrol is likely to come help, going to start a death race? to bad don't care here's a deadly storm in the middle of it. Think you're going to fill up your canteen? enemies will happily bash your face in while you try, even cut scenes are not safe spaces. If you like mad max movies give this a try, it's got it's problems but it's a fun ride.

Shadow Warrior 2

Solid 4 out of 5, Flawed but good.

I remember playing the original in the 90's and it was always good fun, Lo Wang and Duke Nukem.. well duke didn't age that well.. But lo'wang is as snide as ever, I did not realize there was a SW1 (reboot) and a SW3 also. The voice actor is different but I think I read the original guy died. This lo'wang is younger in voice and appearance but I dig it. Anyway the game respects it's origin, it's a straight balls to the wall shooter of yesteryear. Do not expect anything to not involve killing stuff, whole sale, You've really got 2 types of missions, collect/fetch, and elimination missions and they all elimination in reality. The combat is frantic and there are more weapons then you can shake a stick at. You get them at a fairly even pace also, you'll think ah okay I bet this is the last one and nope, they just keep coming, you'll actually run into a problem of trying to decide what weapons to keep equipped in your weapon wheel.. and that's a good problem to have.. You can customize your weapons with gem's which really gives you a lot of flexibility to match your play style. You also have skill/progression system, although I must call out it's weapon upgrade system that uses rare orbs that will have you grind for weeks on end in mind numbing fashion... not good. It almost fells like the game would have been better to move to a fallout style open world. The levels are by far the weak spot, there are only a few levels in the game, they get remixed and tweaked a bit but fundamentally you'll get sick to death of seeing the same areas over and over, the same enemy spawn triggers, over and over. They do change the weather on the levels so it almost seems like it's something new but nah.. not really. The main story is actually very short, majority of the game is taking side missions and bounties, When I first started playing I checked every nook, every cranny, grabbed every crumb I could find, Only later did I realize the chests are basicly random and the only thing that really matters is the boss fights.. so don't feel like you need to beat your brains in collecting every last thing on the level.. most of them you can come back to and it'll shuffle things again, beyond a few weapons mostly you just find ammo/money in chests. Speaking of random, the crafting system is complete garbage in this game, it is in part or entirely random chance of what you actually make, one of the most frustrating things about the game. as much as I enjoyed the combat I was mercifully thankful when the game was over as I had just become numb to seeing the same levels over and over with minor variation and killing the enemies with the same basic strategy.. vanish, attack, vanish, attack. It does have quite a large roster of enemies though some you'll love, some you'll hate some you'll love to hate. What it gets right it gets really right, it doesn't get much wrong, but bits that it does it gets really wrong. It's still worth a playthru and the dialog is often humorous, so it carried forth the soul of the original SW. I did not try multiplayer so can't comment on that aspect, might be good with some friends.. I might still try that before uninstalling. I did have trouble with a error pop up when I started the game but ignoring it I was able to continue to play, no fix found, also had terrible washout the zilla cities wish was partially remedied by turning off bloom, did not affect my scoring of the game since it might just have been my specific setup but worth mentioning anyway. i5-6300 / rx 470 / win10 Game ran great from a performance perspective, 1080p high/ultra everything.

Saints Row IV: Re-Elected

broken as broken gets

got this game free from amazon prime quite whilte back finally tried it out. I didn't try to play the game it has the same issue as "the thrid" remaster if you don't have gog galaxy installed you can't save your key bindings and game settings (besides display) It also has epic software with it, it does tell you you need an epic account for cross platform play however the 1st time I launched the game it just automatically tried to install, and it will continue to try and run eos_bootstrapper.exe which is an epic component. If I had actually paid money for this I'd asking for a refund and I might as well just submit to the big boys and install their launchers what's even the point of gog anymore? Im not even going to try and work around or fix this game.. im just going to move on im so disgusted with SR3 and 4 and GOG.

Saints Row®: The Third™ Remastered

A broken mess

Had sound issues from the start, car engine sounds not in sync, this is a common problem I tried all the fixes of capping fps and vysnc, nothing worked. Finally I found a ASI plugin that fixed the issue, but there was another problem the engine sounds was very low compared to all other sounds.. I never resolved that problem because there is also a problem with auto saving and saving settings that aren't display related. manual saves work, why? well apparently the settings are saved using your "galaxy" user account, guess what if you install this game without galaxy using the offline installer like I do then it breaks saving your game settings. "DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play." BS gog, I mean technically you can play the game offline if you don't mind setting up your key config and sound every time you start the game.. but c'mon. Do not buy this unless you have galaxy installed and use it, I don't.. I buy off gog because I want to instill the game and play and not have to deal with "launchers" otherwise i'd go buy off those other guys.

Zombie Night Terror

Devilish good fun

Hilarious game I haven't finished it yet about 10 levels in, definitely some tough spots but the humans reactions make for some enjoyable mayhem, The dialog is often funny, Loaded with horror and action movie references. The speed ability on the zombies is by far the most satisfying. Only thing I can really knock it for so far is all zombies are the same as in appear to be male, even when you turn a female human it still rises as a male which is kinda lame honestly. If you like puzzle games, zombies and dark humor this is the game for you.

Arcade Paradise

Love letter to the Arcade Era

I thought this would be some sort of business simulator, It kinda is but really. If you boil it down what it really is, is a collection of mini games inspired by classic arcade games. So you are running an arcade but it's really surface level to the games them selves. I was surprised how fun this game is actually, If you grew up in the 80's and 90's in the arcade You will love this game. You can tell a lot of effort was put into it, a passion project I would say. Lots of little detail in the game, although there are some spots that could have used more attention. I could list some things that could use improving but honestly they're all fairly minor things. Except 1, The controls, different games use different controls, fair enough but remaping your controls does not translate into the game, action key is E, it's always going to be E no matter what you map it to the game will tell you to press E.. this is beyond annoying it's confusing esp when so many games have different control types, so it is for this reason I have to deduct a star. Ideally I would have liked to have seen per-game remapping options, but whatever, beyond that The game is a lot of fun everything in the game is a mini game in it self like taking out trash or cleaning a toilet.. ya you do that. If you watch the video trailer here on GoG you get a really good idea of how the game goes, what they don't show you in the trailer is that the games are playable and there are a lot of them so if you like classic arcade games you're sure to find a couple you like. It also has a decent soundtrack, everything in this game has that 80's early 90's vibe.

Kane and Lynch: Dead Men™

Glimmers of what could have been.

I played the 2nd game when it came out and it was okay I really like the getaway/robbery side game. I wasn't sure what to expect in this game, I walked away over all dissatisfied. I am not sure but it seems like there should have been another mode of play given there is a "drop money" and "view score" key bindings but never seems to show up in game play. Game is kinda rough, the main character "Kane" is a horrible, talks to everyone like they're garbage. The story is disjointed and plays out like scenes from a movie, very scripted, don't even bother trying to explore anything, A.I is terrible on both sides there could have been a great squad tactical shooter here but instead you end up ding 90% of the work even when giving your men orders to kill a specific target. It's not all bad though there are a few spots in the game where the shoot outs are well done. I feel like this game had so much potential that was unrealized. You can't skip most cut scenes, I musta watched the one near the end (without spoiling) a dozen times before giving up and asking google how to get past that part of the game. it's a rather short game so like it or hate it you'll not be here long. A lot of the story is just left hanging, your team, Lynch .. so much unanswered. There are 2 endings and I was unsatisfied with both of them. Replay value is pretty low you might play a few of your favorite levels again but not something you'll be coming back to again and again. It's not a bad game but could have been so much more, I don't know if it was time or just poor design choices but it's a real shame it didn't live up to it's potential. PS, I played on win10 and had stuttering freezing issues, look for a fix using a dx8input wrapper dll. It's also mentioned in the gog forum.. shame gog does not have this fix already applied.

Shadowrun: Dragonfall - Director's Cut

Much better than "Returns"

So I wasn't impressed with Shadowrun Returns, Draganfall was much improved.. *WARNING CONTAINS SPOILERS* Some of the things I didn't like about returns still applies but a lot of things are better. For one and this is subjective the story was better and the dialog was better written also. Additionally it seems like there are more branches of dialog, and more skill checks. It just seemed to flow better I guess is what im saying. This time around you've got a permanent team of runners.. not much different than the 1st game As you still have to pay your team a cut of the pay no free lunch but the team members give input as you progress thru the missions and have dialog in between so you feel a bit more bonded instead of just hiring runners (which you can do but I never did).. there's even a dog this time around :P Although *spoiler* by the time you get said dog I thought they would be an addition "he runs where I run" but nah.. he just takes up another valuable spot in your 4 runner team so it's cool but ultimately not worth a spot for another member which was disappointing. This time around the story is a little less linear, Missions can be taken out of order and some will appear out of order also, so you feel like you have some say in how the story progresses. Later in the game you'll be given choices.. none of them make or break your play thru but it's nice to see prior choices have some sort of impact. There are a few endings.. based on your decisions. 1 thing I found very frustrating that the 1st game had was when you get skill checked like "decking" and you don't meet the requirements but you have a Decker in the team.. Sometimes the game will give you an option like "let your decker _____" other times it's a flat yes/no check on you.. doesn't happen all the time but often enough to piss you off and wonder what good a team is. Ultimately though this was a much more enjoyable exp than the first game.. Now off to play HongKong.
