Has Some Charm but is Shallow
The best thing about it is probably the charming art style and pretty good animation. Not quite as lush as the height of the genre in the '90s but does have a much-higher modern resolution.
As for the meat of the game, the puzzles are very easy; as an example, a scenario of being trapped in an enclosed space with nothing but a bolted-shut metal panel and a bag is solved by finding a wrench inside the bag. Some more abstract puzzles later in the game are harder, but even though I’m not very good at this kind of thing I passed all of them with a few minutes fiddling around. It has a strange habit of characters with vital items being completely willing to part with them when simply asked; the items might as well have just been sitting around to take.
This means the game relies very heavily on its story and characters, and there too many weaknesses here. The main lead, Elroy, is likable enough and his search for his missing father is a simple and understandable motivation. The secondary lead, Peggie, is much flatter; she’s blandly pleasant at almost all times and is never given much character or motivation beyond being good at everything she tries which extends to her upstaging the main lead for most of the second half of the game, but without the motivation that he has. The whole “search for Elroy’s father” storyline falls flat because of this.
The minor characters are very mixed. Many of them are forgettable with no interesting personality or role in the story. Later in the game there are finally some characters which are better in this regard, but their visual design is a bit too similar, although there is a joke tied to this, and each of them appears only briefly before being exhausted of relevance.
The villain of the game is quite weak. The story fails to establish him as either evil or a threat for much too long while simply treating him like he is, which robs the story of any sense of heroism for almost the whole game. Even at the end, when the full story of what the villain is trying to do comes out (involving some sci-fi ideas), the story hasn’t explained why it would supposedly be so bad for him to do but just insists on it.
Bottom line; a very easy adventure game with nice art but a pretty sloppy story.
