CARRION

One of the best

I still play through this game every year or two. There is nothing else quite like it, an extremely polished and unique experience. Some people may find it too gory and/or too short.

Baby Steps

Unique, Challenging, Hilarious

Baby Steps is a one-of-a-kind walking simulator and it's done very well. I'm not going to get into the plot or characters, but I think most people will find the game funny and entertaining. I will say that those easily offended or frustrated should probably stay away. It's too bad the demo seems to have disappeared, as it would be a great way to gauge if the game is for you. It takes a little while to get used to the walking mechanics and controls. Once you get the hang of things it all feels pretty natural, but never becomes easy. The realistic physical simulation of balance, grip, slipping on different surfaces, etc. is actually extremely impressive. Another very impressive feature is the camera control. The camera never really gets in the way, even when in very close quarters or enclosed areas and usually can be positioned perfectly to see what you're doing. You will still fall, a lot, but at no time did I blame the game design or controls for any of my failures. There is a huge world to explore, with various optional challenges and items to collect along the way. Most of the time it looks great and the time of day changes as you climb makes for some picturesque moments. Nate's flailing around never gets old and the varying stains on the onesie as you explore is a great touch. Technically the game textures, overall visual quality and performance is a little mediocre, but perfectly acceptable for an indie title. The game defaults to FSR Quality up-scaling, which is pretty ugly. Unless you're playing on a potato or old hardware, I'd highly recommend setting it to FSR Native for the best visual quality. The voice acting, effects and ambient sound is excellent. The dynamic soundtrack also fits the game perfectly, but some people might find it annoying. I never ran into any noticeable bugs or other technical problems with the game on my PC.

Outward OST

Outstanding OST

Outward's OST is absolutely brilliant and it really does define the tone of the game. Enmerkar Forest and Hallowed Marsh may be the best tracks I've had the pleasure of hearing in a game. One small negative specifically with this package is that the files are not properly tagged.

Banquet for Fools

Stand Out Game

Banquet for Fools is like playing a classic game and a modern game at the same time, and for me it feels like the perfect mix. It's such a unique experience. It's not an easy game to pick up and play. I highly recommend reading the in-game guides while paying attention to the helpful videos with each. The game doesn't hold your hand and you'll even need to keep your own notes for quests. It's not really as daunting as it sounds, a useful interface is included for all your notes. I'm actually quite enjoying doing all my own map markers and writing out my own quest log. The physics based combat system is a mix of real-time and turn-based and may also feel very daunting at first, but once you get a handle on the mechanics and controls it's a lot of fun! Presentation wise the game has amazing art and music, it performs well and I haven't really run into any huge issues. The game is actively updated, the offline installers are kept up to date as well as the patch notes. Kudos to the developers for giving proper love to their GOG release.

Tormented Souls

Excellent Horror Game

Tormented Souls really delivers on the visuals, atmosphere and a classic survival horror experience. By classic experience I mean that it doesn't hold your hand and limits resources. Ammo, healing, and even save games are quite scarce. Combat isn't very forgiving, but at the same time not overly difficult. The controls are decent enough and even allow for some limited dodging. The puzzles are more difficult than most players will be used to in this style of game, reminiscent of classic adventure games. For the best experience I'd recommend playing it over a few long sessions while it's fresh in your mind and even taking some notes. Don't feel bad about consulting a guide if you really get stuck. I thought the story was interesting and it improves as you progress. The music and sound effects are well done, but the voice acting seems on be cringe on purpose and I found it irritating. Technically it performs great and I didn't run into any bugs. Highly recommended if you're looking for a challenging new horror adventure.

Dying Light: Definitive Edition

Avoid

Dying Light is an amazing game and I felt it was worth purchasing it again to own a complete DRM-Free version. However GOG's release currently seems to have severe technical issues. I tried for hours to get this game working in a stable manner, but it just randomly crashed to desktop constantly. These crashes could happen anytime, ranging from after 30 seconds to over an hour of game play. Due to how saving works, this makes it so frustrating that it's not even worth playing. Out of curiosity, after returning the game I installed my Steam version. I had no issues playing a few very long sessions on the same PC. The crashing is definitely some kind of problem unique to GOG's release. [Update] I was playing version 1.54.0 at the time of this review. The game has since been updated, it's possible the problems have been addressed.

FINAL FANTASY VII

Sloppy

I feel bad about leaving a poor review for this game, but this version of it is just sloppy and poorly executed. But if you're not fussy about the details, it's a playable DRM-free version of an amazing classic.

Wasteland 3 - Deluxe Edition Upgrade

DLC tracks are not included

This is worth a few dollars, but definitely not full price. It's quite disappointing the digital soundtrack was never updated to include the great music added in the DLCs. A few of these things (or perhaps even all of them) should have just been in the base game. The manual and wallpapers in Deluxe only, come on...I remember when everything listed here was just included with the base purchase of a game.
