S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chornobyl - Enhanced Edition

You can play this on console

I'm rating this based on what I perceive as the effort the developer has put into this product. If my feedback seems rough albeit honest, I only hope it is for the better. The enhanced trilogy is mostly meant (either as intentional or consequential by result) as a console release as the PC enhanced trilogy isn't as impactful as many of us wanted it to be. But you can play it on console if that's your thing. My thinking is they wanted to put the trilogy on modern consoles and they released this stuff on PC so PC players wouldn't complain about it being console exclusive. For a 2025 game on a PS5 or an Xbox Series X it would be a technical and graphical mishap that would otherwise hide an interesting universe and concept. But we're here for PC gaming. For a 2025 thing it's still janky and buggy as of 2007. Gun play, enemies spawning, quest bugs, exploration and stashes, the PDA - not much improvement if any at all. It is fair you consider and compare games released to date and if you're a new S.T.A.L.K.E.R. player you might find this a textbook-underwhelming experience. It just didn't age well, can't avoid saying that. If you call this a "2025 game" you're just praising mediocrity. This is just cringe and we ought to ask for better. Also, the developer could've implemented positional audio which for an open world game is certainly quite impactful - but they didn't. My Sennheiser HD800S and Fiio K17 could've have presented me that. Audio still lags behind player movement. Technically, it pretty much doesn't make the cut. By now you're thinking "get a load of this guy". Get a grip and read on. Compared to the original the enhanced edition is visually better - in a strict 1:1 comparison with the original, vanilla experience without mods. But I expected the developers would take some interesting ideas from modding communities and improve on the original so we wouldn't rely on mods as per the originals. Not in a way that the game becomes something else subjectively and objectively but in a way of consolidating the implementation of the concepts in the series. The disappointment is basically the fact that this doesn't quite beat the original with mods and while this isn't exactly the point of the "enhanced edition" they didn't even make an attempt, it's a missed opportunity. The originals are really kept on life support with mods and spin-offs and, in my opinion, the community is just forcing the issue to keep the universe and community going with the obvious desire for the proper implementation of what they feel this whole thing is or has become, rather. Can't challenge the fact that every returning player was expecting even minor modifications to close the gap between the original and what they got to experience in the meantime. The controversial political aspect of removing Soviet era props. If you paid attention to the story I don't think those props are necessarily part of the core idea of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series and universe and there are various reasons they wouldn't be present in a 2025 product given the context we all have. Whatever the reasons for removal are, I trust the developer that the reasons are fair and I would be understanding of that. Can we move on ? If you're new to the series your forgiveness of jank, obsolete and straight up improper experience would reward you with the promising story and atmosphere to find out what the series is about about - and the enhanced series is a decent starting point for you. Don't miss out. Otherwise, give it a spin but don't get excited.
