Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Relics of War

got this game here a while ago. Just decided to give it another go after getting it free on Steam for yet another Skulls Fest... yeah, about that.... First nothing has changed for the better, difficulty is still horrible for beginners. Graphics need major overhaul. Playable, but repetitive and hard even on easiest settings. Now for the REAL "No-Sale" issues, both here and Steam-related.... WTF is up with the overpriced DLC?!! On a game that's rather long in the tooth as it is! Then go into the Steam Workshop to see if you can just use mods to enjoy the game further....but ALL of them require this DLC or that, if not ALL DLC packs....and sorry, this game is NOT worth $100+ bucks for DLC. In all honesty, the DLC is nothing but a cash grab. You will have MUCH more fun just getting the Dawn of War Ultimate, or Definitive editions or whatever, as well as Dawn of War II. Both frequently go on sale, INCLUDE the DLC, look BETTER graphically, are easier to learn and play, and you can get the COMPLETE SETS of BOTH games TOGETHER far cheaper than you can this DLC slogfest! The pro's- it's Warhammer, doh! Base game is a small installation, doesn't take a lot of room on your HD It starts out mildly fun.... The con's- ...fun, that is until you play it for a couple hours. Base game only DLC is mostly cash-grab Can't use most mods without certain DLC's DLC's almost necessary in order to have a complete game Cost of DLC's is more expensive than better made Warhammer games both new and classic. For the price of the "complete set" you can buy definitive/ultimate editions of 2 or more Warhammer games that include ALL the DLC with them, plus have money to spend on more/better games. All in all, if you just want to see what the hype is, get it free on Steam (or here, if you can) and just play it. Otherwise, save your bucks, because even the Total War Warhammer games and Warhammer III are better, and yeah that's saying something as reviews on those are horrible for the most part!

Don't quite know HOW to rate it

Bought this at GOG so it would be DRM FREE, and I wouldn't have to worry about forced "updates" breaking what I paid for. I play solo, and do NOT use a game client for this game. I prefer to manually download and install. SO, that being said, I sincerely HOPE GOG is not stupid enough to have updated my game files, but at least on a good note I actually SAVED my install files on a storage drive, and I think I am going to start downloading and saving ALL my game files like this, so I don't get screwed by corporate greed like Bethesda. As long as I install my original game files offline, and make certain to set permissions to prevent outside/online access, I should be safe. If not, I will just go through it all again, and stay offline when I play. Sadly, I think they already invaded the London Mod, so I guess I won't be playing THAT one...

Once again...

Seems a lot of free "gifts" are ones from companies with poor support, or poor design, or unfinished and unpolished. Almost all are Indies that people have stopped buying. We even had a game "delisted", and GOG STILL made us buy it rather than gift it. 20 year old games and older still overpriced. Bought over a hundred games this year, just shy of owning 500, and still no major benefits. Seriously, just read the reviews. Looks nice on my shelf, but doubtful if I ever play this. Thanks for the freebie.... Then again Covid was free too....

Sid Meyers on steroids!!

Been playing for three days and at least 18 hours+ now, and absolutely love it! Dont compare with regular AoW, or even HoMM...this is Alpha Centauri done right!! Modernized, better factions, tech tree done similar, not as "preachy" as Alpha Centauri though, and the graphics are amazing!! Too easy to get wrapped up in playing, I logged over 12 hours yesterday 😅 Definitely worth a five star, more if you can get more content or DLC without needing to play online! Seriously, this should not be compared to the fantasy games except MAYBE in play style, and even then this game is deeper. It is a LOT closer to the style of Alpha Centauri and the expansion. Play that if you want nostalgia and less complexity! Heck, give it a runthrough before playing Planetfall, you will appreciate both more! My only complaint so far is the long loading screen... Other than that, once loaded plays fantastic, no glitches, and fairly high graphic and audio settings! Looks beautiful and thats just in 1080p! One of my better investments, actually!!

Works perfect in Win10

The only complaints I ever had about this game is the resolution and screen size limit, and the limited zoom. That being said, it works perfectly in Windows 10 thanks to the last update, and it is just as fun as I remembered, even moreso by the addition of the expansion. I have the original disc, and never got around to getting the expansion, so a major plus here!! Is the game "outdated"? Well duh, its like 20+ years old!! It was the precursor to Black/White, and came out just before Dungeon Master 2. I rarely give a 5 star review, but in all honesty this game is to me a classic, and I am still trying to figure out how to beat the 4th world! Wish the game had difficulty settings, but... it's really fun! Bought it the other day on sale, worth every penny. I own the entire series now, and only wish someone would actually remake them all for modern computers. Yeah, the game is simplistic even compared to Warcraft, but don't let that fool you, the strategy gets harder, some maps have time limits which are real killers when you're trying to figure out how to accomplish the main goal. Thanks for saving a classic, GOG Team!!

Kinda crappy move

Bought the game, and all the available DLCs day 1... NOW they put up the "limited edition", with the same DLCs, and soundtrack! Shouldnt have to buy the game again to get everything!! THIS is why I'm against the DLC business model, nothing but a money grab that even screws people trying to support the developer by BUYING the extra crap! Its also hilarious, its a ten part download, plus the separate DLCs, and under the heading EXTRA, they put the words Base Game...isnt that what I BOUGHT? Doesnt sound "extra" to me! Yeah, I think I'm done for a while with buying games again...bought about 100 give or take in less than 3 months this year, and they pull THIS crap again, on top of really horrible giveaways... Some of the sales have been good priced, especially compared to the "regular" overpriced for 30+year old games with lazy implementation. It's stunts like this that anger the customers rather than keep them buying! Came in to see the "new stuff" added hoping for new games, only to find they "added" DLC to create "limited editions", without offering ANYTHING to the people who bought all that crap separately the first day!

Nice timewaster

Cant complain as I got it free, BUT... Even with low settings, and believe me my computer can handle higher settings...the stupid game frequently locks up my computer and I have to restart. For a small filesize and cheap graphics, this shouldnt be an issue. If I would have paid for it I would be getting a refund! Yes, it looks nice, yes there are some fun and interesting aspects...but the consistent freezes every time I play it make it worthless. If the game actually worked I would give it maybe 3-4 stars because it's better than most timewaster games...but this unfinished POS is barely worth a one star review. Check the forums here, no solutions, and a lot of bad things about the company and comparing this version to Steam.... That alone should raise red flags. If they ever update the game HERE so it works, maybe I will change my rating. Otherwise save yourself the trouble and don't waste your time with this, even free.

LOVE IT!!

Enjoying the heck out of this game! Great graphics, lot of tactics, a lot to learn but easy to pick up on! Plays WAY better than Warhammer 4k Dawn of War, with much better pricing!! Definitely going to look for more like this one!!

Other users are correct!!

Does not start, continuous graphic errors, by now a game should NOT BE SOLD that makes you have to try to find a workaround, ESPECIALLY when both the OLDER versions AND newer ones work "out of the box"! And this was with the download installer, NOT Galaxy, as I really abhor client based games and installs. Would love to be able to rate the game based on merit, but if it won't work, installed as Admin, from the downloaded installer, on a Windows 10 machine with fairly good graphics, without having to search for any other "fixes" that should already be WITH the game, this is the best, most honest review I can give! Settlers II anniversary edition works fine, just dull and stupid AI, Settlers III works, although it asks for a serial key (shouldn't those be able to be edited out by now? Archaic drm system!), Settlers: Heroes works beautifully...why doesn't THIS one? I'll change my review when they fix this issue, as it stands this is what the game deserves, even on sale...and really if it can't be played it's not even worth the sale price just to say you have it.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Anniversary Edition

Not the best ever

Not thrilled with this collection, which isnt updated anywhere near the updates to Warhammer Mark of Chaos. No out of the box support for widescreen, map and mouse tend to jump all over, especially in the tutorial. Tutorial barely keeps up with the player. Map navigation sucks even without the minimap. Three stars for decent graphics and audio. Gameplay is pretty much the same as most games like this...grab resources, build base, research, try to keep base alive while attacking enemies. Basically a better looking scifi Warcraft III. Haven't bothered with expansions yet, because I'm actually enjoying Mark of Chaos more, which looks and so far works, much better than this collection. Hoping the developers actually fix this game so it works better on at least semi-modern machines, WITHOUT the need for mods. Mods are nice for a complete game, but for a game that already has three or so DLC, the vanilla installation should be all you need, bug fixes either provided via patch, or updated game. It's not bad as far as Warhammer games go, BUT, frankly I feel the Devs pretty much either gave up on it or ignored it. Message to Devs and GOG- our monitors are all 16:9 at the very least, few of us use 4:2 dinosaurs. Please try to keep up.
