Hacking and slashing 'till the break of dawn.

Grim Dawn, the ridiculously addictive action/RPG that transcends distinctions between quality and quantity, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com with GOG Galaxy support for multiplayer and achievements, and a 10% launch discount.

Since the ancient times, the coming of dawn has been the arch-nemesis of dedicated gamers the world over. This is all about to change as the coming of Grim Dawn will soon become associated with endless gaming sessions for many years to come. Or until your powerhouse Hardcore character meets their permanent death.

All the features you crave in a modern ARPG are here. You can tailor your hero to suit your play style by mixing and matching the six available classes in awesome dual-class combinations, with dozens of skills and modifiers sprinkled on top. Then, make sure you have enough room in your inventory to store the abundance of clickable loot found in this vast, apocalyptic fantasy land. Take them with you in world-shaping quests that will make you face tough choices and decide the fate of entire villages as you question your alliances and face the consequences of your actions. Hundreds of uniquely skilled enemies (and your homework) will attempt to stand in the way of your heroic deeds, but that will only make the visceral, spectacularly depicted bloodbath feel all the more satisfying.

Surrender yourself to the gothic allure of hacking and slashing and welcome the Grim Dawn, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 10% launch discount will last until March 25, 4:59 PM GMT.

In the press :

"Blow for blow, this is one of the best ARPGs in years." - IGN
"The spiritual successor to Diablo 2 that fans have been pining about for years." - MMORPG
"Grim Dawn's the action-RPG I've enjoyed the most in quite some time." - Rock Paper Shotgun
WTF GOG?!?

I never thought I'd say this, but slow down on the releases will ya?

I can't keep up, I'm now way over budget, and yet you keep adding more good shit. I'm considering mortgaging my house.

drealmer7: I'm not typically an aRPG fan, but if it has a good story, good characters, and good combat, I become interested (I hate diablo for these reasons, it has none of this, imo.) I'm interested in hearing the depths of these elements from those who have played, as well as a comparison to the Van Helsing trilogy.
I think Grim Dawn has more similarities with Victor Vran than with the Van Helsing games, except whereas Victor Vran focuses more on mindless coop fun and tight mechanics (there's even some platforming and verticality, via jumping/double jumping/wall jumping, like an "evolution" of Nox), Grim Dawn is more about the tight, well written and decently long story.

In my opinion, as an old diablero who loves most aRPGs, Grim Dawn is one of the best games on GOG, right now, especially if you're a fan of the genre. If you prefer slower, more tactical stuff, then this game might not be for you, though. Most turn-based or RTwP cRPG fans should steer away from this one, unless they can tolerate twitchy action fast-paced fluid combat in order to enjoy the amazing story.

lowyhong: Story is okay I guess...
Why just okay? Do you not particularly care for stories in general with games or would you say this game's story is just okay?

I can like (not just tolerate) twitchy action fast-paced fluid combat a lot, if it is good/engaging and has some skill requirements (even if it is twitch skill or learning strengths and weaknesses of enemies or kiting or whatever else, if it's fun, good mindless kicking ass can be fun! Grinds and loot-focused repetition, no.) I like good writing and stories, and as long as it's not a puzzler or platformer, I will play almost anything that is well written with an engaging or unique story if the gameplay isn't shitty. How does the story compare to other aRPGs?

Thanks both for the feedback!

Nice! Hopefully this is a day one release. This week has definitely made up for... last week.

Reglisse: Great!
I can uninstall my Steam version...so good :)

Thank you!
My thoughts exactly. Thanks Crate for choosing to release this on GoG! Now I hope I can redeem my early supporter copy here.

Stryder2931: Does anyone know if it is a single player, or can NPCs join the character as well?

Congrats GOG on getting a new title!
NPCs won't join the player, but will fight mobs to defend their town/camps.

Incidentally one of the coolest features in the game is monster in-fighting. Factions will fight one another. I once had a hero monster left half-dead due to this. Made it easier for me to wipe him off the face of the planet.

SeduceMePlz: A recent patch added support for XInput controllers and the Steam Controller, right? Anyone tried it with the Xbox 360 controller? Does it play well?
One of the Codexers tried it and said it works pretty well.

There are two parts to it: NPCs and lore dump. I've read through all of the lore notes thus far and they're pretty cool, and the conversations with some NPCs are also neat, but that's mostly just fluff for the background. In essence the game just wants to send you on your way to massacre more meatbags. I know it sounds like I'm saying it like it's a bad thing, but it's really not - it's more the game preferring to focus on its strengths, which is the "action".

Then, I can safely recommend Grim Dawn to you. It has arguably the best story I've experienced in an aRPG (a genre that doesn't usually focus on narrative). As for the gameplay -- take my opinion with a pinch of salt, as I'm a bit biased --, it's right up there with Victor Vran's. I don't find it to be grindy at all, progression feels natural and fluid while still giving you that rewarding feeling, as well; levelling up requires some thinking, if you so desire, but you can also just play it more "casually", as well, and the game can be enjoyed by either kind of players.

Again, be aware this is just an opinion by someone who loves the game; maybe I'm being too vague, and I apologize in advance for that. Maybe wait for the inevitable aRPG hater to give you a different -- and perhaps more grounded -- opinion, so you can safely make up your mind. :P

Cool. I had a blast playing Victor Vran last year. Grim Dawn might be just what I need right now. :)
THANK you!!!

I believe so, based on the names. Will need to be confirmed by someone who already bought the game and isn't a backer, or by someone who is low-level backer and got only some of these DLCs.

If that's the case then this situation is no different than the Pre-Order DLC exclusives controversies.

If not worse. Are these exclusive DLC for 100+ dollar backers?

If I understand correctly, practically every kickstarter tier had a small in-game item DLC associated with it, even the lowest $18 tier: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/crateentertainment/grim-dawn/description.

It's nothing new. I believe that's how kickstarters tend to work, not that I ever participated. I was just impressed by the sheer number of different (or not so different) DLCs.

mrkgnao: Yes. I thought about that one too, but it doesn't have light (or the implication of light) in it? They should rename it "Starglow Valley".
avatar
groze: Well, there's always Hyper Light Drifter, though maybe the "hyper" part of it kind of disqualifies it automatically. :P
If you're gonna go that way, how about Torchlight and Schein? :)

Apparently, it came out of Early Access on Steam about three weeks ago.
