Story:

The player takes the role of a namable Hero. The Hero's name has an effect on his statistical growth over the course of the game. Battles are fought in a turn-based format and experience points and gold are awarded after every battle, allowing the Hero to level-up in ability and allows them to buy better weapons, armor, and items. Progression consists of traveling over an overworld map and through dungeons, fighting monsters encountered via random battles along the journey. Show more

While I've only played this one recently, Dragon Quest 9 and 11 are my favorite JRPGs of all time. It's worth playing just for the Monster designs alone. In my opinion this series is better than Final Fantasy in terms of story, characters, and music. It's certainly more basic than other RPGs and certainly grindy, I feel like you can't claim to love RPGs if you haven't played at least one of these games all the way to the end. I also think it would be a great fit on GOG.CanadaCat

While I've only played this one recently, Dragon Quest 9 and 11 are my favorite JRPGs of all time. It's worth playing just for the Monster designs alone. In my opinion this series is better than Final Fantasy in terms of story, characters, and music. It's certainly more basic than other RPGs and certainly grindy, I feel like you can't claim to love RPGs if you haven't played at least one of these games all the way to the end. I also think it would be a great fit on GOG.

There are hardly any RPGs on GOG. This game might be short by today's standards, but back in 1986, this was groundbreaking. The art style by Akira Toriyama and music by Koichi Sugiyama is very well-done! RPGs are one of my things, and this game along with Final Fantasy is what made me love RPGs.

Dragon Quest was my first real RPG and I was just 7 yrs old with the NES. I fell in love with it. It was so good Pokemon copied its formula. lol Also I believe they also made an anime of it. I was too young to ever finish it, because the cartridhe broke. These were simple times but it was so advanced for its time, and thought ahead. Please put this on so I can complete it. Hopefully add features like HD better colors and art. Like you can switch between classsic and new. It really does deserve a more modern take.

This is the first Dragon Quest, the one that started the series. I have Dragon Quest 7 or 8 I think (?) for the playstation 2 around my home somewhere. But if not for the first DQ I would not have the game I have now. I think for that reason alone, it should be preserved.

this was my first (or second) rpg ever played. I subscribed to Nintendo Power magazine because they were giving away a free Dragon Warrior/Quest game. Unfortunatly Nintendo was all out of games and i just got a Mario Mintendo Power lapel pin. I bought Dragon Quest a few months later.

OG only PLEASE. It's very upsetting what squeenix did to 3 everytime I remember all the great times I had with 3 then knowing that crappy remake exists brings me to tears knowing how such a great story/vision was ruined by woke people. By the way 3 was the very first DQ I ever played.

Save feature was broken easily on cartridge back in old days, but today's techology, we have digital games so saving is possible, and i hate to go to rom/emulator route in order to play this, however, remakes/resmasters are coming, so id like to preserve this game for nostalgia sake.

I remember playing this on the old NES back in the day and it being SO COOL! IT'S LIKE YOUR FIGHTING THEM! Now its one of the best grandpa's you can have. It's streight forward and short for any vet of an RPG title, and has some humor. It's said if you like Final Fantasy, you'll like Dragon Quest. Its about the same, except with quirky humor and dosen't take it's self so seriously. Definatly deserves preservation.

This was the first of the Edrick trilogy I played. I remember it like it was yesterday. The SNES remake is one of the best JRPGs in history. It needs an update, yes, but let's hope the remake updates it properly. The first Dragon Quest is magical, legendary, and mythical.

FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed. The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.
