Story:
Eight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed. The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.

It was one of my first PC games back in the 2000s and I still remember the "freedom" that was to go from planet to planet doing missions, trading resources and fighting bandits in space. If a game should get a remake, is this one so give it a chance and try it. kalolui

Probably the very first game I got addicted to. I remember it blowing my mind back when I first played it at 13 years old. The atmosphere, the story, and of course the game opening up to you for possibilities you couldn't think of is something few games retain nowadays. It was ahead of its time and to this day has a rather loyal fanbase that refuses to put it down. It's also very easy to mod/learn how to mod, which makes it a great canvas for people to create their own spins of the game. Highly recommended.

I remember buying this game and playing it for a week solid. Thankfully it was summer vacation and I could devote all my time to this spectacular game. Every space sim game I've ever played is compared to this, Freelancer is the Gold Standard. If they aren't like Freelancer, then forget about it. The characters were great, the story was amazing, the gameplay was fun and memorable. I want this game on GOG because I want to be able to buy it and play on my system now. I lost the game discs years ago and I have not played this in years. Please bring Freelancer to GOG!

It was the first space sim I ever played, and it still unmatched even to this day. This game needs to be preserved as an example of what all other space sims should strive to be. The bar was never surpassed after Freelancer set it.
Such an incredible game, the dawn of an era, and full of excellent performances from the likes of Jennifer Hale and George Takei. It's one of the first real attempts at an open world game; but they hadn't crushed the dream into mindless task grinding yet, so while there isn't so much content out there, it's cool to just explore. And the story has no right to be as good as it is. I replayed this in full from my CD copy a few years ago, it really feels to me like one of the first truly modern sci fi games. Bring it back, please!

One of the first space sims I've ever played, and one always dear to my heart even with the countless others I've played at this point. It may not have been the greatest at what it did, but to the young teenager me the fact that I could do as much as i could do whether it was trading or bounty hunting or what felt like a cool story at the time was amazing. The fact that there's still a thriving mod community for this game yet no legal way to actually purchase it outside of expensive second hand copies is a shame, really.
This is my favorite space game of all time. The campaign was amazing. The characters are memorable (with some legendary actors making cameos), and the game simulates the stressors of being on the run from the government (in a space game, no less...amazing feat). Plus there are amazing mods that are still being developed today. Please bring this game back GoG! Instabuy for me. Minor spoilers: running from Liberty Space with no allies besides Juni, no real destination, and no real plan is so well executed. You feel desperate to get to the next station to repair your damaged fighter before it all blows up and you're on the run again. Such an amazing and stressful feeling.

Freelancer is everything I loved about Privateer, with great controls, story, and impressive graphics at the time and a gameplay loop that keeps you engaged. When coupled with the amazing multiplayer features the game still has to this date... it is a no-brainer to get a quality, legitimate release that can help bring more people to its amazing world. In my opinion, while games like Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen, and No Man's Sky touch upon the great things this game could do in multiplayer - none quite reach the levels of world interactivity a good multiplayer server of this game offers. Exploration, PVE, PVP... its a fantastic experience and one that absolutely deserves to be shared with others.

Possibly the best space simulator game I ever played, how I wish we could get a re-make with the UE 5 engine. *Good story *Good variety of Ships *Interesting Star Systems *Trade Economy between systems *Secret Wrecks to find *Hidden systems *Brilliant Atmosphere, no matter what system you visit Heck, this game has it all while other still try to catch up.

There is still no game that comes close to the fun gameplay of Freelancer. I have no idea why there aren't copy cat games around or why MS have not tried to sort out the rights to the IP. The fact that Discovery Freelancer multi-player mod still exists with hundreds of players is proof of this games replayabilty after all of these years.

Black & White 2
Black & White 2In the game, the player takes the role of a god called from the void (nothingness) to help those who invoked them. However, the player is not an omnipotent style god, but rather a god who rises and falls with his believers and the player must help develop their nature according to their good or evil desires. The player also has a creature, their physical representation in the world, which takes the form of an anthropomorphic ape, lion, wolf, turtle, cow, or tiger. Its physical manifestation can grow to an immense size, and adopt a good or evil persona separate of the player's. They develop their character as the player rewards or punishes their actions. In addition to the god simulation and city-building elements introduced in the original Black & White, Black & White 2 also features elements of real-time strategy gameplay, with the addition of controllable warfare and fighting units.
